If you listen to my radio show you might know that we often get in to a discussion on “sport or not a sport”. I don’t have near the time to get into my thoughts on Golf, NASCAR, Bowling, Diving or Cheerleading! But there has been a new marketing campaign recently rolled out by Reebok. “The sport of fitness has arrived”. Sounds cool, huh? Sounds official, yes? The campaign is for Crossfit. Before we continue I will let you know that I workout at a Crossfit facility. I enjoy it & feel like it works. But I can’t allow the “sport” tag to be attached. Without head to head physical interaction it does not qualify under my definition. But it is a great way to get in shape and any creative way to get more people working out is always a positive thing!
I love the competitive aspect. It’s just not a sport. I love the group setting & how challenging it is. I’ve worked out most of my life & rarely find myself near the top of any leader board after a workout is complete. The awareness is great. There are two fantastic Crossfit facilities availible in town and I’d recommend both. If you are anti-Crossfit but pro-fitness, I say cool & good for you. We are all different and I am all for individuals bettering themselves. If you like Zumba, P90X, yoga, cycling or whatever, I think it’s still good. But I can’t allow “sport” to be attached. Just like weightlifting, dancing, running(close) are not sports. So whatever you do, keep doing & stay active. Sport or not, just call it what it is, working out.
Like Kenny Powers says “I don’t try to be the best at exercising, I’m a professional ball player”.
