You’ve seen these athletes on television during the CrossFit Games as they power cling and push jerk gigantic rubber weights with a mighty steel bar above their heads. AMRAP, kipping, WOD, the box – what do these letters and words mean to the outward eye? It seems as though CrossFit has taken on a character of its own, and it has made its way to Huntsville.
The CrossFit Way
CrossFit, Inc. started up as a fitness program in 2000, and has grown to about 3,400 CrossFit Affiliated gyms throughout the world. Scott and Lori Bean of Madison, Alabama, started this workout routine in their garage, as many other athletes of CrossFit do. Eventually, they joined a local CrossFit gym.
“We were instantly hooked to CrossFit and the feeling of community,” Lori says. The Beans were so passionate about it that they decided to start their own – CrossFit Nomad. On July 5, 2012, Nomad celebrated its first year anniversary.
CrossFit meets Madison
CrossFit Nomad first opened its doors in an RV storage unit and recently moved to a more centrally located place off Madison Boulevard. In the past year, Nomad has welcomed new athletes, upcoming trainers, different buildings along with millions of squats, lifts and pull-ups. Nomad believes that each person who comes is unique and accepted.
“Our goals here are the same whether it’s an elite athlete or a person concerned about their overall health: we all want to become stronger and healthier,” Lori explains.
From cardio exercises to strength building techniques, the workouts at Nomad weave in a competitive strategy, but not with others – it’s a competition with yourself. While maintaining safe and thorough demonstrations of each exercise, athletes are timed to see how fast and efficient they can complete workouts. It’s a race against yourself – your own strength, willpower and endurance. Through this non-competitive yet competitive atmosphere, people build relationships as they complete similar goals.
“Something happens when you literally share sweat and tears together,” Lori says.
Celebration
On Saturday July 28th, CrossFit Nomad will celebrate its one-year anniversary with a special bring your friends WOD. This is a great opportunity to show your friends and family what CrossFit is or find out what this workout is all about. They’ll be giving away a T-shirt to the person who brings the most friends. Also, the person who has the most sign up (and pay for) Foundations Course on August 4th and 5th will receive one month free membership.
Nomad Success Story
“My husband wasn’t very excited about me going to CrossFit Nomad. He thought it was just “one more thing” that I would start and quit after a few weeks. Now he’s my biggest supporter because of the change he’s seen in me.
I have more confidence, energy and I’m a lot happier. I’ve lost 45 pounds and I’m much stronger. I look forward to going to the “box” and doing the WOD with people who are like family to me. We compete with each other and cheer each other on to do our best. I’m so thankful for Scott and Lori Bean and the wonderful people at CrossFit Nomad!”
