Most of the time when parents hear “let’s go to the fair” we really hear “let’s spend more money than we have sense,” because let’s face it, the fair can be expensive especially for a large family.
Here are a few tips on how to spend less when heading out to the fair grounds.
Food
A plethora of yummy deep fried goodness is around every corner and everyone will want to try the rainbow cotton candy, the funnel cakes, and fresh lemonade. So here is what I do with my kiddos: We eat a full meal at home before we go.
Once there I tell them they each get to pick ONE and only one item for dessert. No lemonade and funnel cake, its one or the other. I hate to admit this but if they are really full from the meal before they usually can’t finish it and the parents end up getting a little dessert too in the leftovers.
Water
Speaking of food, take your own water if possible. I know it sounds sinister, like taking your own snacks into the movie theater, but hey, all of us frugal gals do it. Now when the kids scream “I am thirsty” you don’t have to worry about spending extra at the lemonade stand.
Ride
Fairs have parents held hostage to buy tickets for rides. Most places you have to pay to get in and then pay for a stack of tickets to dole out at each ride like handing out rations. If possible, go on a discount day or armband night to get more bang for your buck. If that is not an option, then at least have a budget. Tell each child they get X amount of tickets each and when that is done there are no more. Stay firm!
Games
Be wary of game booths that are free at the fair because they are usually a trap. However, there are sometimes good free shows, attractions or petting zoos, especially at state and county fairs, so take advantage of the freebies if you can and make sure to get a picture of the kids in front of the giant cow sculpted from cheese.
Be Prepared
Talk to your children about your budget and expectations before you go. This way no one is surprised or disappointed.
Do you have some great tips about taking kids to the fair frugally or otherwise? I would love to hear them!
