Nature lover’s rejoice at the abundance of hiking trails in North Alabama. In fact, there are so many, it’s hard to pick which one to try…. especially if you are new to the area or feel like venturing out from your usual route.
3 Best Hiking Spots in Huntsville
1. Wade Mountain
Wade Mountain Nature Preserve is located in North Huntsville, accessible from Pulaski Pike or Spragins Hollow Road. It’s home to a Greenway as well as several miles of trails. For the “best of” we recommend Piney Loop with Devil’s Racetrack trails. There are several benches for resting along the way.
You might encounter mountain bikers and or horses on your hike so follow trail etiquette! The preserve has both challenging hikes and easy walks. Have fun.
2. Green Mountain
Located in South Huntsville, Green Mountain Nature Trail is also known as the Madison County Nature Trail. It’s a nice, short, easy hike and a pretty popular one too. Part of the beauty of this hike is its simplicity coupled with so many fun things to look at. There’s a covered bridge, lake, log cabin, and chapel to mark your progress.
You’ll see families of all ages and dog-walkers, maybe a fisherman or two, and occasionally, a photo shoot or a wedding! Green Mountain trail is a fantastic place to bring out-of-town guests for fresh air and a photo-op.

3. Monte Sano
Did you think we’d leave Monte Sano State Park off this list? It’s full of hiking and biking trails, and if you’ve never hit one of these trails…..what are waiting for?
The many, many miles of trails range from easy to pretty difficult. Some of these trails will require some preparation and good gear. For this “best of” we recommend the Bucca Family Trail. It’s popular and easy, but it’s long and good “get started” trail. It’s pretty heavy with mountain bikers too, so exercise good trail etiquette.
