When you think roller rinks don’t you think preschoolers? To most people, that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen but the folks at Aldersgate United Methodist Church had a vision. They’ve created a designated time for preschoolers to bring their riding toys, scooters, and the like and enjoy the wide-open space of the roller rink – disco ball and all.
It’s kind of a genius idea. Moms are always looking for a place to take their little ones when it’s too rainy, too cold, or too hot to play outside. Now, every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month from 9:30-11:30 AM, they can add Aldersgate on the Parkway (the old Skate Odyssey) to the list of possibilities. For a donation of $5/child (cash or check only please) preschool age children can ride their trikes, bikes, and scooters on the rink. If the tyke is brave enough there are roller skates available at no extra charge starting at size 9 and parents are welcome to skate along. There is also a bounce house, ping pong, and a child-sized basketball hoop for those who might lose interest in riding around.
For younger siblings, there is a special room right next to the Snack Bar filled with toys, books and a miniature playhouse. With it’s comfortable rocking chair and changing table, that same room is also great as a space for nursing moms who might want a little privacy. And that snack bar is open for business but you are also more than welcome to bring your own food.
Mom’s Thoughts: While my daughter’s favorite part had to be the disco ball and Kidz Bop music (imagine Studio 54 for a 3-year-old), my favorite feature was definitely the ability to easily see the entire rink from my seat. I didn’t feel like I had to constantly follow behind her but I still knew where she was and what she was doing. Overall, a great option for moms in the Huntsville area to add to their indoor activity list.
About Rocket City Mom
Rocket City Mom is an online parenting website created in 2010 by a local mom who was new to Huntsville and looking for information on raising kids in the Tennessee Valley. The site now has more than 10 regular contributors, all local moms and dads, who share their insights and experiences with the goal of making life just a little easier for other local parents. On the site, you’ll find reviews of local attractions, a directory of services and businesses that have been mom approved, resource information (i.e. moms groups, support groups, birthday party planner, kids eat free) and much more!
