After the last day of school last week I decided to take my four year old preschool graduate out on the town for an afternoon of fun. When my husband got home from work, I passed off the baby and off we went, headed to downtown Huntsville for the Greene Street Market and the new The Children’s Corner, presented by The Downtown Forty Seven and the Toy Place Downtown. Downtown was buzzing because it was also the first day of The Sidewalk Art Stroll. We parked in the downtown parking garage and walked up to the square and headed East for the church.
The gated garden area at the Church of the Nativity Episcopal is where you can find The Children’s Corner of Greene Street Market and it was packed with kids doing FREE activities, and y’all know I love FREE!
Snacks and Stories
My little guy didn’t know where to start first so we just stopped and took it all in for a few minutes and petted a dog that was walking by with a nice family. We saw toddlers having fun drawing with sidewalk chalk and then we stopped by the stairs just in time to hear a nice lady from Huntsville Madison County Public Library read a great little story.
As we made our way around two little children playing Velcro ball at the toy booth, my son was delighted to see children decorating pots and planting seeds at the CT Gavin tables. The seeds of choice were tomato, sunflower, and dill; he chose dill because he said he had never heard of it before. The pot now resides on the kitchen window sill and is checked daily for any signs of activity!
We then stopped by and spoke to our friends at Spoiled Rockin’ Kidz painting a line full of lovely young lady’s faces. On our way around we also picked up a bag and a piggy bank from a nice gentleman manning the Premier Bank booth and picked up our hand painted bag we had worked on earlier.
Snack Time
The kiddo was getting hungry and we could see people across the street at the market eating samples and licking popsicles so we decided to head over and see what we could find for a quick snack. As we entered there was booth after booth full of fresh vegetables, flowers, and foods that my son had never seen before. We would stop and discuss colors, textures, cooking methods, fragrances, and tastes.
Some vendors even had fresh made foods and my picky eater tried a rosemary cashew and a piece of homemade sourdough bread. Sadly by the time we got to the popsicle tent they were all gone but the lady in the next tent over had homemade ice cream so that wasn’t too bad of a consolation prize. We ate the ice cream as we enjoyed a live band. We had a fantastic time and best of all had only spent four bucks on ice cream and one dollar on parking.
Afternoon of Fun
As a mom and a frugal finder, I couldn’t have asked for a better late afternoon activity for me and my child. The best part of it all was that he saw so many new things and we are still discussing many of them days later. We had frugal fun and education all in the same two hours and this mom couldn’t be happier about that.
